Bonny Lea Farm Launches Annual Fundraising Campaign with its Bonny Lea Farm is… “One Word Project”
November 27, 2019 – CHESTER – Bonny Lea Farm will soon be launching its annual fundraising campaign with the results of its recent Bonny Lea Farm is… “One Word project”. The short video and photos of what “Bonny Lea Farm is…” feature participants and staff summing up what Bonny Lea Farm means to them, in one word.
In a world that can be less than kind to people living with an intellectual disability, Bonny Lea Farm is an oasis. Bonny Lea Farm asked participants and staff for one word that describes what Bonny Lea Farm means to them. The responses were uplifting and, in some cases, breathtaking.
JASON’S WORDS
When we entered the workshop to talk about the “one word project”, Jason jumped in and said, “That’s easy, INDEPENDENCE.” The next day we came back to talk to a participant who had not been at work the previous day, Jason said, “I thought of another one. SUPPORTIVE.” On our final day of capturing images Jason said, “You know, there is another word that I think of, EMPATHY.”
All of the words offered by participants and staff were remarkable for the speed with which the words came to mind. But there was something about how Jason kept coming up with more.
INDEPENDENCE – the state or quality of being independent; freedom from the control or influence of others.
SUPPORTIVE – providing encouragement.
EMPATHY – experiencing the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another.
“Behind each of these words is a story – of times and places where they have been absent. We are honoured that Bonny Lea Farm evokes these feelings from the very people we were founded for,” says David Outhouse, Bonny Lea Farm’s Executive Director.

Bonny Lea Farm has been empowering people living with intellectual disabilities through their residential, vocational and enhanced programs since 1973. It has also recently opened The Shop on Central, at 227 Central Street in Chester. The small gift shop and café features products made at Bonny Lea Farm and other social enterprises from across Nova Scotia.
