Responsibilities and Duties: Residential Counsellor

Responsible for teaching and/or assisting Participants with Adult Daily Living Skills

  • Support Participants (adults with intellectual/physical disabilities) at home and in the community
  • Teach, supervise, and support all activities of daily living
  • Support individual and small groups of Participants in individual choices in all activities
  • Encourage and organize activities that contribute to skill development, socialization, and fun
  • Transport Participants in organizational vehicles
  • Build positive, healthy relationships in the workplace

Work Environment

  • Shift work including days, evenings, overnights, weekends
  • 30 (part-time) or 77 (full-time) hours bi-weekly
  • May include regularly scheduled overnight awake shifts
  • May experience crisis situations, which place the safety and well-being of employees/participants in jeopardy
  • May work singularly or in tandem with a Participant Support Worker
  • May be required to lift in relation to household activities and physically assisting participants
  • May be exposed to bodily fluids, viruses and common illness

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Preferred: University degree or a graduate of a recognized community college in Human Services or related program
  • Asset: Possession or willingness to obtain all 7 Provincial Core Competencies (Fire & Life Safety, Health & Personal Care, Medication Awareness, Individual Program Planning, Crisis Intervention, Behavioural Supports, Standard First Aid/ CPR-C) & Food Handler’s certificate
  • Asset: Experience working with or supporting people living with physical and/or intellectual disability
  • Demonstrated experience developing appropriate relationships in a helping or supporting capacity
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Asset: Alternative communication abilities
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Required: Valid NS Driver’s License
  • Required: Possession or willingness to attain Class 4 driver’s license
  • Required: Acceptable Driving record/abstract
  • Required: Suitable Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Search

Job Types: Full-time (77 hours bi-weekly); Part-time (30, 60 hours bi-weekly) and Reserve (Casual)

Salary: $19.20/hour probationary; $20.63/hour + overnight and weekend shift premiums as applicable
