About Us 

  • Located in Chester, we are Nova Scotia’s first and only one-stop all-inclusive residential, vocational and therapeutic service provider for adults with intellectual disabilities. Our participants are the reason we are here and they have come from across Nova Scotia and beyond to access our services.

Responsibilities and Duties

Responsible for supporting Participants’ programming within their homes and community

  • Support Participants (adults with intellectual/physical disabilities) at home and in community
  • Implement recreational activities
  • Effectively communicate with Participants, co-workers, supervisors
  • Maintain daily logs
  • Facilitate Participants’ Individual Program Plan goals
  • Motivate and encourage participation in activities
  • Administer medications
  • Transport Participants
  • Effectively manage behavioural challenges with sensitivity & care
  • Work as part of a team

Work Environment

  • Requires shift work between 9:00am and 10:00pm on weekdays and weekends
  • Requires operation of different styles of passenger vehicles
  • May experience crisis situations, which place the safety and well-being of our staff and participants in jeopardy (severe behaviours, suicide threats and attempts, verbal and physical acting out)
  • May work singularly or in tandem with a Residential Counsellor
  • May be required to lift in relation to household activities and physically assisting participants
  • May be exposed to bodily fluids, viruses and common illness

Minimum Qualifications 

  • University degree or a graduate of a recognized community college in Human Services or required area of study for specific position
  • Possession or willingness to obtain all 7 Provincial Core Competencies (Fire & Life Safety, Health & Personal Care, Medication Awareness, Individual Program Planning, Crisis Intervention, Behavioural Supports, Standard First Aid/ CPR-C)
  • Experience working with or supporting people living with physical and/or intellectual disability
  • Demonstrated experience developing appropriate relationships in a helping or supporting capacity
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Alternative communication abilities (asset)
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Valid NS Driver’s License
  • Possession or willingness to attain Class 4 driver’s license
  • Acceptable Driving record/abstract
  • Suitable Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Search

Job Type: Full-time (60 hours bi-weekly), Part-time (30 hours bi-weekly)            

Salary: $17.65/hour probationary; $18.95 /hour permanent
